And so the legend began. Once upon a time, a young monk was cast out of the monastry, sent to far away lands to discover the secret of the drum.
Wandering through dark and ominous places where his every move was stalked by shades of rumbling bass and electronic demons that threw themselves in his path, he was filled with fear and dread. He persevered until one day he came to a cave. From inside the cave, he could hear a muffled drum, but the drum did not beat, instead, it spoke; "Come to me, and I shall tell you my secret". The nervous young monk entered the cave, and as his eyes grew accustomed to its dim interior, he could make out two shapes. On the floor there lay a simple devotional drum, and in front of the drum, there rose a golden serpent. Once again the voice spoke "now, who will you choose?" The young monk could not be sure whether the voice came from the serpent or the drum. From the mists of his childhood, he remembered "The Legend of the Golden Snake" an old tale that his grand mother used to tell. He knew at once that choosing the serpent would give him eternal life and bring him riches beyond his wildest dreams. Pondering this, he wondered what the drum might bring, perhaps nothing, perhaps even death, "the fate of all mortals" he thought to himself. Then he remembered the kindly face of his teacher and the reason for his wanderings. Filled with strength, he at once knew that he must refute worldly desires and choose the drum. As he took it in his hand, there was a flash of light and the serpent crumbled to dust. Once again, the voice spoke: "A thousand blessings my child, for you have chosen me and you are now my son, and as such, you shall forever carry my rhythm in your heart." The young monk was overcome with a sense of joy and at once knew that the demons that had stalked him could be tamed to bring about an invincible union; he would join them with the secret of the drum and would return to the monastery to spend his days fighting evil with his divine knowledge. The young monk was J. Saul Kane, and as the first release on Depth Charge Recordings, 'The Legend of the Golden Snake', sets out an agenda that draws in a haunting oud motif, super tough drums, freaky sound effects and a punishing dub bassline; signature themes familiar to all those who know Depth Charge and the secret of the drum. Also featured is 'Poison Clan '95', a hammond organ and percussion groover with a hook that hits like a blow dart. 'Five Deadly Venoms' then outlines various methods of bringing doom to an antagonist via a deadly concoction of up- tempo beats and film samples. Rounding things off, 'ASP' rolls with a sparse down tempo break, analogue key tones and effects, a menacing soundtrack for covert operations.  10" |
